Nodular acne, pain, lesion and pus
How many times have you felt your skin being pinched like a thousand devils? Most of us are fortunate enough that we do not have such experience but as a matter of fact some of us do. There is almost a layer of lesion and pus under the skin of some people and they carry with them, pain and irritation wherever they go. We are talking about acne at its severest form: the nodular acne.
Nodular acne, the painful and the very painful types
Blackheads and whiteheads typify the non-inflammatory type of acne. It is, however, the inflammatory type of acne that concerns us much more. There are two types of very painful acne. Pimples sometimes become red and large. These deeper swollen tender lesions form pustular heads and begin to rupture. The other type does not rupture. These lesions get inflamed and can sometimes rupture under the skin. Both these types of acne cause immense pain and if left untreated can leave deep scar marks. This is the worst. This is nodular acne.
Rid yourself of blackheads and whiteheads
Vitamin A is used to treat a variety of acne lesions. Blackheads and whiteheads, the non- inflammatory types are effectively treated by tropical retinoids. When applied directly to the skin, tropical retinoids help to open up clogged pores by peeling away the top layer of the skin. Oral retinoids are given to patients of severe inflammatory acne or in other words nodular acne. It not only peels off the skin but also decreases the secretion of oil producing glands.
Nodular acne, catch the raging bull by the horn
Patients must see a dermatologist. Nodular acne cannot be treated without a doctor's help. If over-the-counter medicine fails to be of any help in improving the acne problem, isotretinoin may be prescribed. If taken for 15 to 20 weeks, it considerably reduces the oil glands resulting in decreased bacterial growth. It also prevents the growth of lesions by reducing cell shedding and stickiness of cell in the follicle. Isotretinoin is a potent medicine against acne. Acne is completely cured within 20 weeks of treatment.
Nodular acne cured, what about side effects?
Treatment with isotretinoin can burn a hole in your pocket such is the expense. It can also leave you physically and emotionally wrecked. Side effects can be both sever and numerous. Inflammation of lips and mucous membrane of the eye, dry mouth and nose, itching, muscle aches and decreased night visions are just to name a few. Abnormality in liver enzyme and increase in blood cholesterol and lipid levels are other serious side effects. Doctors monitor the condition of their patients to ensure that side effects do not become a significant health hazard. The most serious side effect is the potential birth defect that it can cause to the fetus of pregnant women taking the drug. It is therefore imperative for women undergoing treatment, not to become pregnant during the course of the treatment or within a stipulated period after the treatment. It is better to consult a doctor on this matter. These side effects usually disappear after the medication is stopped.
